The next position I will introduce to you is in a category all it's own. Like the positions discussed in Part 1, this is a great position to use in the first few days of life, however, this is a baby-led position. All the other positions mentioned in this position series are initiated and led by momma, except for this one. This position takes advantage of a newborn's instinctive reflexes and allows momma to just lay- back.

Biological (AKA Laid-back)

This position can really shine immediately after delivery. Babies are hardwired to do some serious breastfeeding after entering this world, and that is a great time to give this position a try. The idea of this position is to comfortably recline back and place baby on your chest like it is skin-to-skin time. Then, let baby do his/her thing! The unique characteristics of the areola create the perfect target 🎯 for the hungry baby, and remember The Nose Knows so baby is equipped to find the nipple. Newborns are also born with this awesome reflex called the "breast crawl", and you will watch in amazement as baby inches across your chest to latch.

You may find that you need to help baby out a little bit in order to achieve a good latch. You can assist by creating a "boob sandwich" (check out My Latch Mantra) and by gently guiding/supporting baby's bobbing noggin.

This video does a nice job explaining biological positioning.

This video shows a few babies doing an awesome breast crawl.

Those videos should help to demonstrate how the biological position is truly baby-led. As you can see, it can require some extra patience to allow baby to lead the latch, but the end result will be worth it. Because this is a baby-led position, it is essential that baby be interested in breastfeeding. I encourage as much skin-to-skin cuddle time as possible, which is the starting line for a good biological latch and this allows baby to nurse when ready.

Helpful tip: if you find that your nipples are sore using the other positions, give this one a try! In each position, baby will latch at a different angle giving sore spots on your nipples a break.

Peace, joy and blessings!
